Mission
The NCIS mission is to investigate and defeat criminal, terrorist, and foreign intelligence threats to the United States Navy and Marine Corps-ashore, afloat, and in cyberspace.
Crime Reduction Program

NCIS has implemented a collaborative Crime Reduction Program (CRP) to proactively fight crime affecting the naval community. Working with the Office of the Judge Advocate General (OJAG), public affairs elements, the Family Advocacy Program (FAP), the Chaplain Corps, and other Department of Navy (DON) entities, NCIS has facilitated this cross-cutting effort to help Navy and Marine Corps communities reduce crime.

As members of communities positioned around the world, military personnel and their dependents may face a wide range of potential criminal behavior. These threats are symptomatic of communities everywhere, though the challenges of deployment and extended separations can impose additional stress on military families and create additional opportunities for crime to surface. When crime impacts military families, it can have a further impact on military readiness.

The CRP organizes several crime prevention campaigns throughout the year. Each campaign highlights key precursors of crime and victimization, focusing on a singular theme, such as identity theft or domestic violence. The strength of the CRP lies in the partnerships forged between DON entities that have different responsibilities but a common interest. By focusing on a particular problem and approach during the course of each campaign, these entities can speak with one voice to address crime proactively, educating and increasing awareness among military families by providing a full range of information and resources.
