Humanities Tennessee's eagerly anitipated Southern Festival of Books, now in its 24th year, is coming to downtown Nashville the weekend of October 12th, 2012. The Festival has been held on the second full weekend in October since the first festival in 1989. Legislative Plaza in downtown Nashville will play host to Festival events from Friday, October 12th through Sunday, October 14th, with author sessions scheduled in the hearing rooms of the Tennessee Legislature, beneath Legislative Plaza, as well as in the Nashville Downtown public library. The Festival is, and always has been, free and open to the public to promote and celebrate the joy of reading and lifelong learning. No advance registration or tickets required, although seating is on a first-come basis.
Approximately 250 authors attend the Festival each year, from prominent national and regional authors, to debut novelists, poets, biographers, and children’s authors. Each author on the Festival’s program takes part in a session, either a solo reading or a panel discussion, which is followed by a book signing in the Author Signing Colonnade. Books by all the participating authors are available for sale at the Festival’s book sales area. There will also be book exhibitors and three performance stages located throughout the event. The Chapter 16 Stage highlights readings and other literary performances; the Café Stage features music for local songwriters and poets; and the Youth Stage features special events for children including appearances by musicians, artists, and storytellers. Children's and young adult events take place on Saturday and Sunday only.

Saturday, October 13, 2012: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Sunday, October 14, 2012: 12:00 noon -5:00 p.m.
