Law Enforcement Driver Instructor Training Program (LEDITP)

The Law Enforcement Driver Instructor Training Program (LEDITP) was developed in order to train instructors employed with Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies in law enforcement driver training subject matter. The LEDITP is an accredited program. Developed in 1976, the program trains law enforcement officers in the principles, philosophies and techniques of teaching law enforcement driver training curriculum.
The LEDITP equips the student/instructors with the skills, techniques, operational principles, legal considerations and instructional methodologies to teach a comprehensive driver training program to law enforcement officers. The Center staff present a variety of courses designed specifically for the law enforcement driver. The courses provide fundamental and advanced skills which will enhance the instructor's teaching proficiency. Classroom instruction, laboratories, and practical exercises are used during the training. At the completion of the program, students will have achieved levels of competency that will enable them to successfully design, coordinate, evaluate and facilitate a law enforcement driver training program.

Instructors
The lead instructors for the LEDITP are current and former law enforcement officers with extensive investigative and police experience from a multitude of federal and state agencies ranging from criminal investigative positions to state patrol offices. These instructors are experts at enabling participants to develop the necessary skills to be competent trainers. Instructors attend numerous advanced training courses including the Driver Instructor Training Program and continually hone their skills through specialty training from government and civilian sources.
Prerequisites for Attendance
Students must be employed in law enforcement or law enforcement related positions and have assigned duties that require knowledge of the subject matter. Students must be actively engaged in, or expected to be assigned as a driver training instructor for their organization. Students must be in good physical condition, possess a valid driver's license, and have knowledge of basic vehicle dynamics and law enforcement driving operations. In addition, the student must be a graduate of an instructor training program or provide certification from a commanding officer that requisite skills and experience in instruction are possessed.
This course is not recommended for remedial or corrective driving students.

What clothes or equipment should I bring to the program?
A uniform is provided for you while participating in this program. With this uniform you will need your personal shoes, socks and underwear. Other clothing considerations will be for your personal time after class and on the weekend. Bring appropriate clothes for the climatic time of the year.
If you plan to use the gym or weight room facilities while at the FLETC you need only bring appropriate sport shoes. Gym clothes are provided.
All equipment used during the program will be furnished by the Center and there is really no need to bring much else. The following items will be useful during certain environmental conditions:

What if I need health care or emergency treatment?
The on-site Health Unit and Athletic Trainers Office (ATO) provides care for illness, training injuries & treatment, and rehabilitation. The Health Unit is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the ATO is open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the last patient treatment begins at 5:30 p.m. Treatments are also given during lunch time. For more serious injuries or illnesses students may be referred to a local health care facility.
How can I prepare myself before arriving at the FLETC?
A 20 minute classroom lecture with training aids is required for successful completion of the program. Some students may choose to bring driver training related instructional aids for this class. Students are REQUIRED to bring a 20 minute presentation with them that is driver training related. If you do not bring one...one will be assigned.
What climatic conditions should I expect?
The climate at the FLETC is relatively mild year-round with a mean temperature of 68 degrees. Temperatures may reach the mid 90's during the summer months, and down to the 20's in the winter months (January and February). Humidity is high year-round.
Will Front-Wheel-Drive Training be Part of this Program?
The LEDITP utilizes both front and rear-wheel drive vehicles in the various driving courses.

Generally moderate. Varies in summer from mild to hot, and in winter from moderate in the east and south to very cold in the western mountains. Duration of the freeze-free period averages 185 days, ranging from 130 days in Garrett County to 230 days in southern Maryland and the lower Eastern Shore Temperature. Average annual temperature: 55.1 degrees Fahrenheit. High temperatures occur in July, the warmest month, averaging in the mid to upper 80s. Low temperatures in January, the coldest month, average in the low to mid 20s. Rain. Average annual rainfall: 40.76 inches. Peaks in July and August when thunderstorms average once every five days. Snow. Average seasonal snowfall: 20.6 inches. Ranges from 10 inches on the lower Eastern Shore to 110 inches in Garrett County.
