Professional Development Workshops for Teachers

The National Archives at Kansas City is pleased to offer professional development in-service programs for school districts within our region. While there is no charge for any workshop or materials supplied, for workshop requests requiring an overnight stay, due to budget limitations, travel and expenses may have to be paid for by the requesting school district. Most workshops can also be provided via video conferencing. Please call for more information.

Workshop Offerings:

Using Online Resources of the National Archives

Length: 60 minutes (minimum) to 90 minutes

Location: On-site at your school—requires a computer lab setting so each participant can have their own computer.

In this workshop teachers will be exposed to the online educational resources of the National Archives including: Teaching with Documents, the Archival Research Catalog (ARC), Access to Archival Databases (AAD), Our Documents, Online Exhibits, and more! Learn how to locate online primary source documents to use in the classroom.

Hands-On History: Incorporating Primary Sources in the Classroom

Length: 60 minutes (minimum) to 90 minutes

Location: On-site at your school—classroom setting

Once you have found primary source documents to use in the classroom, then what? In this workshop, teachers will discover through a variety of teacher-tested techniques how to integrate documents into classroom instruction to reinforce historical thinking skills. Workshop participants will also engage in document analysis activities and participate in group activities that show how to develop lessons from primary source documents.

Finding Primary Source Documents at the National Archives at Kansas City

Length: 4 –6 hours

Location: National Archives at Kansas City, 400 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, Missouri

This workshop involves a visit to the Central Plains Regional Archives branch. Take a behind the scenes tour of the facility, and then spend the rest of the day conducting research in original records held by the branch. Topics of research will be determined prior to the visit.
