National Gallery Of Art's Terrace Café Offers Eastern Mediterranean Menu During The Quest For Immortality: Treasures Of Ancient Egypt
Washington, DC --In celebration of the National Gallery of Art's exhibition The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt, the Terrace Café is offering an Eastern Mediterranean menu. It will be made available on the terrace level of the East Building adjacent to the exhibition, June 30 through October 14, 2002. The Terrace Café is open 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.
The buffet includes baba ghanoush (a delicious eggplant spread that is one of the oldest recipes of the region); hummus (a tasty chickpea spread whose health benefits Plato and Socrates wrote about in 400 BC); fava bean salad (a light appetizer); baklava (a flaky almond pastry); and pyramid- and pharaoh-shaped cookies. The buffet also features a wide assortment of sandwiches and salads, among them a chicken salad sandwich with green olives, raisins, and scallions on flat bread; a pomegranate-glazed, grilled lamb sandwich with mint; as well as fattoush (an Egyptian bread salad with tomato, cucumber, and mint). The Terrace Café will also offer an Egyptian cheese plate with apricots, dates, and almonds, and an artichoke, red pepper, and Feta cheese tart.
The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt is the largest selection of antiquities ever loaned by Egypt for exhibition in North America. It includes objects that have never been on public display and many that have never been seen outside of Egypt. The exhibition is organized by the United Exhibits Group, Copenhagen, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in association with the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Cairo. Objects are loaned by the Egyptian government and come from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Luxor Museum, and the site of Deir el-Bahari.
The National Gallery of Art and its Sculpture Garden, located on the National Mall between Third and Ninth Streets at Constitution Avenue, NW, are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is free. Visitors may gain free entry daily to The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt exhibition on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a $2.50 service charge and a $1.25 handling fee, and a maximum of six passes, per order.
