Graduate Student Epidemiology Program for Agencies

Submit proposals for 2014 internships in fall 2013.

The need for technical assistance is more acute than ever, so the MCHB is increasing its commitment to assisting agencies by supporting up to 20 state-level MCH/CSHCN agency students and 10 city and county MCH department students.

As of 2012, the GSIP has placed over 275 students from 44 Schools of Public Health in over 120 agencies.

GSEP Goals

  • Enhance students' skills in data analysis
  • Encourage training in MCH epidemiology
  • Provide assistance to state and local health agencies with data-related projects

Design an Internship Proposal

  • Think about agency needs in the areas of data collection, data analysis, and program evaluation.
  • Make requests identify clearly-defined quantitative and analytic tasks in the suggested areas that will provide a student with substantive professional experience in the MCH epidemiology field
  • Produce a relevant, useful product for the agency
  • Identify a preceptor to work with the student on the proposed project to serve as a mentor and be involved with the internship project, providing direction and contact, working with the student to achieve the stated objective.
  • Assign a faculty advisor to oversee the project and assure its academic value
  • Decide upon a start date. Projects should be conducted during the summer of 2013 (beginning in May, June, or July)
