USCIS Hosts a Chinese-language engagement (Jiao Liu) on 'How to Petition for an Immediate Relative"

Join us for our next national Chinese-language public engagement on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m. EDT.  This engagement is the second in a series called Jiao Liu—meaning “engagement” in Chinese. The theme of our Jiao Liu will be “How to Petition for an Immediate Relative.” 

Modeled after the agency’s successful Spanish-language Enlace series, Jiao Liu expands our ongoing efforts to work directly with our customers in their native language. At each Jiao Liu, USCIS representatives and subject-matter experts, who are fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, will be on hand to provide information, and answer general questions about immigration and naturalization.

Individuals in the New York City area may participate in person at our USCIS District Office located at 26 Federal Plaza, Room 3-310, New York, NY 10278. USCIS y la Ciudad de Los Ángeles unen esfuerzos para crear las “Esquinas de Ciudadanía”

Los residentes de Los Ángeles tienen un nuevo recurso para aprender acerca de la ciudadanía y prepararse para la naturalización. Ahora cada una de las 73 localidades de las Librerías de Los Ángeles tienen un espacio designado como “Esquinas de Ciudadanía”, en el que se mantiene un despliegue de información esencial para aquellos que quieren solicitar la ciudadanía o aprender más acerca de los beneficios y responsabilidades que conlleva el ser ciudadano.
  Estas  “Esquinas de Ciudadanía” han sido posibles gracias a un acuerdo de colaboración entre USCIS y la Ciudad de Los Ángeles. Algunos puntos importantes de esta nueva iniciativa son:
  • Entrenamiento para el personal de la librería acerca del proceso de naturalización y los recursos de USCIS disponibles
  • Mantener un listado de los grupos sin fines de lucro en la comunidad local que se dedican a brindar asistencia en torno a la naturalización
  • Proveer acceso a las salas comunitarias de las librerías para clases de ciudadanía e inglés.

Para anunciar la iniciativa, el Director de USCIS, Alejandro Mayorkas, el Alcalde de Los Ángeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, el Jefe de Bibliotecarios de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles, John Szabo y el Director de Distrito de Los Ángeles, Phyllis Coven  llevaron a cabo una conferencia de prensa seguida por una ceremonia de ciudadanía para niños en la Librería Pública Central de Los Ángeles el  19 de septiembre.
 “Hoy damos un paso más hacia la meta de expandir los recursos de ciudadanía para los inmigrantes en Los Ángeles, proveyéndoles información acerca del proceso de naturalización en las librerías”, dijo Mayorkas.  “Estamos orgullosos de poder colaborar nuevamente con el Alcalde Villaraigosa y la ciudad de Los Ángeles en esta importante iniciativa y apoyar a los inmigrantes en su proceso de convertirse en ciudadanos americanos”.

Durante la ceremonia de ciudadanía para niños, el Director Mayorkas se dirigió a un grupo de 53 niños del área entre las edades de 1 a 18 años, quienes más tarde recibieron Certificados de Ciudadanía. Los niños y sus padres ondearon orgullosamente sus banderas americanas, celebrando su ciudadanía estadounidense.  Estos niños, provenientes de 17 países, son ahora ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos de América.

USCIS Partners with City of Los Angeles to Create “Citizenship Corners”

Los Angeles residents have a new resource to learn about citizenship and prepare for naturalization. Now each of the 73 locations of the Los Angeles Public Library have designated “citizenship corners” containing essential information for those looking to apply for citizenship or learn more about the benefits and responsibilites of being a citizen.
These “citizenship corners” are thanks to a partnership between USCIS and the City of Los Angeles. Highlights of this new initiative include:
  • Training for library personnel on the naturalization process and available USCIS resources;
  • Offering a list of non-profit groups providing naturalization assistance in the local community; and
  • Providing access to library community rooms for citizenship and English language classes.

To announce the initiative, USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles Chief City Librarian John Szabo and Los Angeles District Director Phyllis Coven held a press conference followed by a children’s citizenship ceremony at the Los Angeles Central Public Library on September 19.

“Today we take a further step to expand citizenship resources for immigrants in Los Angeles by providing information about the naturalization process in libraries,” said Mayorkas. “We are proud to yet again partner with Mayor Villaraigosa and the City of Los Angeles on this important initiative and to support immigrants on their journey to become American citizens.”

During the children’s citizenship ceremony, Director Mayorkas addressed a a group of 53 area children ranging from ages 1 to 18 years old, who later received certificates of citizenship. Celebrating their U.S. citizenship, the children and their parents proudly waved their American flags. These children  hailed from 17 different countries and are now citizens of the United States of America.

International Students: Social Security Number and Driver's License Issues

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) Programs are aware of current difficulties that some F and M students have when applying for public benefit such as a Social Security number (SSN) or driver’s licenses.  The programs are working on a solution that will be implemented on September 14, 2012.  Read more at Study in the States and check back on September 14.

Formulario I-9, Verificación de Elegibilidad de Empleo actual permanecerá vigente luego del 31 de agosto de 2012

¿Se enteró? Hasta nuevo aviso, los empleadores deben continuar utilizando el Formulario I-9, Verificación de Elegibilidad de Empleo, que está disponible en la página de Formularios de USCIS. Aunque esta versión actual del Formulario I-9 muestra la fecha de control de expiración de la Oficina de Presupuesto y Gerencia (OMB, por sus siglas en inglés) del 31 de agosto de 2012, este Formulario I-9 aún es válido. Nos encontramos en el proceso de actualizar el Formulario I-9 y proveeremos información actualizada acerca de la nueva versión tan pronto esté disponible.
Hay varios pasos a seguir para publicar un nuevo Formulario I-9. Con su ayuda, estamos bien adelantados en el proceso. Esto es lo que hemos hecho hasta el momento:
  • Le invitamos a comentar sobre las propuestas revisiones del Formulario I-9
  • Hemos revisado sus comentarios y hecho unos cambios al propuesto Formulario I-9
  • Publicamos una notificación en el Registro Federal el 22 de agosto para informarle acerca de la última versión del propuesto formulario e invitarle a hacer más comentarios.
¿Qué es lo próximo? El formulario es revisado y una vez aprobado, se podrá a su disposición para que lo use. Nosotros le diremos cuándo. Por favor, subscríbase a I-9 Central para recibir actualizaciones del Formulario I-9.

Current Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, Remains Valid After August 31, 2012

Did you hear? Until further notice, employers should continue using the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, that is currently available on the USCIS forms page. Although this current version of the Form I-9 shows the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) control number expiration date of August 31, 2012, this Form I-9 is still valid. We are currently in the process of updating the Form I-9, and will provide updated information about the new version as it becomes available.
There are a several steps to issuing a new Form I-9. With your help, we are well along the way in the process. Here is what we have done so far:
  • We invited your comments on proposed revisions to the Form I-9. 
  • We reviewed your comments then made some changes to the proposed Form I-9.
  • We published a notice in the Federal Register on August 22 to inform you of the latest version of the proposed form and invite further comments.
What’s next? The form is reviewed and once approved, the new form will be made available for you to use. We will let you know when. Please subscribe to I-9 Central to receive Form I-9 updates.
Employers must complete Form I-9 for all newly-hired employees to verify their identity and authorization to work in the United States. For more information, or to obtain Form I-9 and the Handbook for Employers in English or Spanish, visit I-9 Central.
