Travel to and from the FLETC (Brunswick, GA)

 

Arrival

All students traveling to the Center, including those driving, must call the Transportation Office, commercial (912) 267-2458 as soon as transportation plans are firm and NO LATER THAN FIVE (5) WORKING DAYS PRIOR to class commencement to advise time and place of arrival. This information will confirm the program dates, and will schedule, if needed, appropriate ground transportation between commercial terminals and the Center. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT CALL WILL NOT BE GUARANTEED TRANSPORTATION.

STUDENTS will arrive at the Center NO EARLIER THAN 7:00 a.m. THE DAY PRIOR to commencement of training. Assigned housing will not be available until 4:00 p.m. Facilities and housing will not be available for early arrivals WITHOUT THE EXPRESSED WRITTEN PERMISSION OF YOUR EMPLOYING ORGANIZATION indicating the nature of the official business requiring early arrival. Students traveling by privately owned vehicle (POV) should arrive before 10:00 p.m. If housed in an on-Center dormitory, the room will be not be available until 4:00 p.m. Students who plan to arrive at the Center after 7 p.m. should make arrangements for their evening meal as the cafeteria will be closed.

Information for those planning to drive to the Center

The Center is located 6 miles north of Brunswick, GA, between Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL . The names FLETC, The Center, and Glynco are interchangeable; however, these are not on a map--locate Brunswick on the southeastern coast of Georgia. U.S. Highway 17, a north/south route from Maine to Florida, and Interstate 95. Exit 38 on I-95 directs you to the facility; highway signs are to be observed closely when approaching the Center.

Students' automobiles will be registered upon arrival at the Center. Therefore, it is required that students have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance.

Commercial Air Service

 

Brunswick Golden Isles Airport (BQK)

All students traveling to the FLETC by commercial air are encouraged to route their travel into the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport. The Brunswick Golden Isles Airport is conveniently located adjacent to the FLETC (2-3 miles). When making your reservations, please refer to the destination as BRUNSWICK (BQK). The FLETC will provide ground transportation to and from the Center for each flight at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, if PRIOR arrangements have been made.

Delta and ExpressJet/The Delta Connection (formerly Atlantic Southeast Airlines) provide round-trip connections to the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport. Effective February 10, 2002, this service will be via regional jet. The aircraft being utilized is a 50-passenger jet known for safety, comfort and convenience. It can fly over 500 miles per hour at altitudes as high as 41,000 feet. A flight into Brunswick should reduce the time waiting in airports for connecting flights and bus transportation.

Jacksonville, FL Airport

The Jacksonville International Airport is approximately 70 miles away from the FLETC. Most major airlines serve this airport. There are several flights per day between Jacksonville and Atlanta as well as a number of flights from other major points of departure.

What to do if you miss the Jacksonville Airport Bus

Students who arrive in Jacksonville after the departure of the FLETC bus, due to delayed flights ONLY, may call FLETC Security at (912) 267-2461 to arrange for special transportation to the Center. Other late arrivals will be responsible for their own transportation to the Center. Rental cars are available at the expense of the traveler. Greyhound Trailways provides bus service from downtown Jacksonville to Brunswick. The cost is approximately $15. For information on times call (904) 356-5521. Upon arrival in Brunswick, taxi service to the Center will cost approximately $6.00.

Interstate Bus Service

Bus service by Greyhound Trailways bus company commutes daily on a generally north-south route. The bus station in Brunswick is open 7 days a week, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Amtrak (Jesup, GA)

Rail service by AMTRAK serves the area with a passenger stop at Jesup, Georgia, which is approximately 35 miles away. Center transportation is not automatically dispatched to Jesup. Center transportation will be provided if students call (912) 267-2458 5 DAYS PRIOR to their arrival. There is no commercial transportation to the FLETC from Jesup, Georgia.

 

Departure

Return transportation from the Center to points of departure

All students (including those driving) will provide the student travel coordinator with departing transportation arrangements no later than five (5) working days prior to travel. This information will be collected during class; center transportation will not be available to students who do not report their travel plans. In most cases, outgoing transportation to the Jacksonville Airport will be scheduled in the following manner:

For classes which terminate in the morning, students should arrange for flights to Jacksonville, FL or Savannah, GA, which leave after 2:30 p.m.; transportation will depart at approximately 12 noon. All students with a morning graduation must check out of their rooms by 12 noon.

For classes which terminate in the afternoon, transportation will be provided to Jacksonville at approximately 5:00 a.m. the following day. Students should arrange for flights which leave no earlier than 8:00 a.m. Transportation for AMTRAK departures and Brunswick Golden Isles Airport (BQK) will be scheduled to meet departures as needed. All students with graduations after noon must vacate their assigned rooms by 9:00 am the day following graduation. Students with their own transportation may leave the same day following graduation.

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS are urged to notify the Training Resources Coordination Division (TRC) of the specific need as soon as possible (912) 267-2269 so that arrangements can be made. Ground level handicap equipped dorm rooms, dorm rooms with refrigeration for prescribed medications, and vans with wheel chair lifts are available upon request.

For students who are using injectable medication, a Biohazard Sharps container will be made available for safe hypodermic disposal. Please notify the Registrar at (912) 267-2269 or your Agency Representative prior to arrival.

For students with child care responsibilities, a child care facility is on-site. Arrangements must be coordinated through the students parent agency representative and the TRC (912) 267-2269. All other questions or problems are to be directed to your agency training officer.
