Commissioner Rosenworcel on Next Generation Mapping Presentation
STATEMENT OF
COMMISSIONER JESSICA ROSENWORCEL
Re:Next Generation Mapping Presentation by the Office of Strategic Planning
(July 19, 2012)
Let me start with the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words. This has
never been truer than in the kind of presentation we see here today.
This agency has a treasure trove of data. The challenge is making it useful—for
consumers, for policymakers, and for business innovators with new ideas about services
that can grow our economy and change the way we live. Mapping efforts like these help
us delve into this data with purpose. They facilitate good decision making. More than
that, they show us at a glance where progress has been made, and where there is room for
improvement. In addition, by sharing data from the Commission with others, as we have
with the Department of Education, we can swiftly and simply multiply the value of the
information we already have on hand.
