What are Affiliated Archives?

The affiliated archives program permits permanent historical records to be maintained and made available to the public at a non-NARA facilities by non-NARA staff. In this article, Jerry Wallace tells about the seven affiliated archives established since the Federal Records Act of 1950 first authorized program.

The United States Naval Academy Archives

The USNA Archives was established in 1970 and designated as a NARA affiliated archives in August, 1985. As a result of this agreement, earlier records were returned to the Naval Academy in 1987. The collection is designated as Record Group 405, Records of the United States Naval Academy.

Hartranft Affiliated Archives, Pennsylvania State Archives

In June, 1995, the Pennsylvania State Archives, a unit of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, was designated as affiliated archives of the National Archives and Records Administration, to maintain custody of the "Records of Brevet Major General John Frederick Hartranft as Special Provost Marshal for the Trial and Execution of the Assassins of President Lincoln," as part of NARA's Record Group 393.
