Skid Control In-Service

This course of instruction will reinforce the skills necessary to control a vehicle that has lost traction, regardless of the driving situation, the vehicle, or the braking system.  The student must demonstrate the basic knowledge of vehicle dynamics by applying the techniques and fundamentals of skid recognition, avoidance, control, and recovery while performing law enforcement-specific tasks normally associated with law enforcement operations.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE (TPO):

Given a law enforcement vehicle, the student will demonstrate the proper skid reaction, avoidance and recovery while maintaining proper control of the vehicle at all times.

ENABLING PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES (EPO):

EPO #1: Demonstrate skid reaction by implementing the proper skid control, avoidance, and/or recovery techniques.

EPO #2: Demonstrate the proper braking, steering and acceleration techniques as they relate to the principles of vehicle dynamics.

EPO # 3: Complete a series of law enforcement tasks while recovering from skids.

Non-Emergency Vehicle Operations In-Service

Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) spend many of their duty hours in and/or driving a motor vehicle. Unlike citizen drivers, LEOs are also expected to drive safely with divided attention and at speeds above the posted limit. These two factors combine to expose them to greater risk of involvement in a crash. Through lecture, laboratory and practical exercises, students will receive direction on how to avoid crash involvement.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE (TPO): 

Given an appropriate law enforcement vehicle, the student will demonstrate four corner awareness and braking techniques while performing law enforcement tasks without causing property damage or injury.

ENABLING PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES (EPO):

EPO #1: Identify four defensive driving characteristics/skills.

EPO #2: Demonstrate six low-speed driving techniques.

Law Enforcement Emergency Vehicle Operations In-Service

This training course is designed to reinforce the techniques of the Law Enforcement Emergency Vehicle Operation (LEEVO) through hands-on training and demonstration.  The student will be required to respond to a law enforcement emergency response situation.  The student will initiate an emergency response with full emergency equipment and radio communication.  The student will demonstrate the proper evasive driving techniques while avoiding all road hazards and properly clearing intersections. The emergency response will ultimately result in a pursuit situation.  The student must demonstrate the basic fundamentals to safely control a vehicle at all times, but especially while in a pursuit situation.  The knowledge gained, along with the techniques and skills learned during this course of training, will help the law enforcement agent/officer read the road, plan ahead, and safely operate a law enforcement vehicle while performing law enforcement-specific tasks. 

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE (TPO):

Given a law enforcement emergency response, the student, while using emergency equipment, will maintain control of the vehicle and decide when to terminate the response within the established criteria shown on the Law Enforcement Emergency Vehicle Operation Evaluation Form.

ENABLING PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES (EPO):

EPO #1: Demonstrate proper hand positioning, steering, acceleration and braking techniques.

EPO #2: Demonstrate the proper lines of travel in a straight away and turns while maintaining proper vehicle positioning, smoothness and control of the vehicle.

EPO #3: Demonstrate the proper evasive driving techniques/actions that may be necessary for a LEO to avoid road hazards.

EPO #4: Demonstrate the techniques used in the proper clearing of an intersection.

EPO #5: Demonstrate the factors that influence the decision to continue or terminate a pursuit.

Prerequisites for Attendance

1) Must possess a valid driver's license. 2) Must be in good health as to be physically fit for full performance of law enforcement duties, as prescribed by the parent agency. 3) Be able to perform an operational safety inspection on a law enforcement vehicle.

Additional Information

Students are advised to bring a brown bag lunch, as there is no food service available onsite and the allotted 30-minute lunch period does not allow enough time to dine offsite. The student capacity is 12.
