Welcome to the fall 2012 issue of Making Cents, the online newsletter that tells you what’s new and striking at the United States Mint. Be sure to check back every 3 months for a new issue.
Nine in a Line and a Box
Take nine coins, nine rows, nine columns, put them all together, and what do you have? Coin-Doku! Coin-Doku, based on the popular numbers game Sudoku, has recently been added to the Games page under “Puzzles.”
Play is the same for Coin-Doku as Sudoku, except that you use $1 coins instead of numbers. All you have to do is be sure there's only ONE of each coin in each row, column, and nine-coin square on the board. Just drag a coin to a square where you think it belongs, where it's the only one of its kind in that row, column, and box of nine squares. Then you can click a certain star to see if you're right.
This game has plenty of hints so you don't get stuck. At any point, you can check your guesses and change your mind. You can also click "Check coin numbers" to see how things add up! Every day, there's a "game of the day," but you can also click for a random game.

$1 Coin Events: Benjamin Harrison
Which Presidential $1 Coin has been created most recently? During the last quarter, it was the coin that bears the name and portrait of 23nd president Benjamin Harrison. The Statue of Liberty is on the back and some inscriptions are incused (stamped) into the coin's edge.
At the start of Harrison's term, the Treasury had more money than was needed, but the surplus soon became a deficit. Among Harrison's accomplishments as President, he worked to fund national improvements, to unite with other countries in the Americas, and to ease the effects of tariffs on international trade.

Quarter of the Quarter: Hawai'i Volcanoes
This quarter is hot! It's not only hot off the presses, but it shows an eruption of one of the still-erupting volcanoes in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
Because the island of Hawaii is over one of our planet’s “hot spots,” this mountain on the island will continue to erupt for a long time to come. In the meantime, you can see its fire “frozen” in time on this newest quarter, number 14 in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.
