Highlights:
- Based
on combined data from SAMHSA's annual National Surveys on Drug Use and
Health in 2004 and 2005, rates of alcohol and illicit drug use by industry
category were assessed among adult workers aged 18 to 64 currently employed
full time.
- An
annual average of 8.2% full time workers aged 18 to 64 used illicit
drugs in the past month and 8.8% used alcohol heavily in the past month.
- The
highest rates of past month illicit drug use were found in the accommodations
and food services industry (16.9%) and the construction industry (13.7%).

Worker Substance Use by Industry Category, is based on SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).
The survey is conducted by the Office of Applied Studies
(OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
(SAMHSA). SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use
and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence,
patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and for selected
mental health measures in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized
population, age 12 and older. SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug
Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use
and for selected mental health measures by State.
