Federal-Local Collaboration to Reduce Gun Violence

Collaboration between federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors offers advantages for local crimefighters facing high rates of gun violence:

  • Federal penalties for firearms violations are generally far more severe than state penalties — the threat of more severe penalties gives local police good leverage against gun offenders.
  • Federal law enforcement officers have ready access to national criminal information and can sometimes offer cross-jurisdictional law enforcement powers; this may broaden the investigative net and enhance limited local resources.

From the federal perspective, collaboration with local authorities provides valuable local intelligence and manpower.
