Vision, Mission, Overarching Goals
Healthy People frames the Nation’s prevention agenda through a set of science-based, 10-year national objectives for promoting health and preventing disease. Since 1979, Healthy People has set and monitored national health objectives to meet a broad range of health needs, encourage collaborations across sectors, guide individuals toward making informed health decisions, and measure the impact of our prevention activities

Mission
-
Over the decades, the mission or purpose of Healthy People has been defined by its diverse audience and users, who include government officials at the federal, state and local levels, businesses, professional organizations, researchers, and academic institution. For each of these users, Healthy People serves a variety of purposes, ranging from providing information on current health status or public health priority setting, to offering a comprehensive statistical compendium on health promotion and disease prevention.

The Secretary’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2020
has proposed a set of four draft statements that would define the mission of
Healthy People 2020. To improve policy and practice by:
- Increasing public awareness and understanding of the underlying causes
of health, disease, and disability;
- Providing nationwide priorities and measurable objectives and goals;
- Catalyzing action using the best available evidence to improve policy
and practice;
- Identifying critical research and data collection needs.

Overarching Goals
-
Each iteration of Healthy People has included a set of overarching goals. Should the overarching goals be realistic and achievable or should they be aspirational in nature? For example, Healthy People 2010’s two overarching goals are aspirational:
- Increase quality and years of healthy life.
- Eliminate health disparities.
