Healthy People 2020 logo

Over the decades, the mission or purpose of Healthy People has been defined by its diverse audience and users, who include government officials at the federal, state and local levels, businesses, professional organizations, researchers, and academic institution. For each of these users, Healthy People serves a variety of purposes, ranging from providing information on current health status or public health priority setting, to offering a comprehensive statistical compendium on health promotion and disease prevention.

I think Healthy Peopl is vital to our nation and it's well being. We need a foundation in order to achieve a healthier and well lived life It puts more things out there of what we need to do, it sets goals for ourselves, and it's up to us as individuals, in our professions, and in our communities to take all of these ideas and make the most of them.

The article and information of 2020 is well spoken. The trick is trying to figure out if people will actually read it more and become aware of the problems that they might be having in not being well informed on what they eat or are taking to well benifit them in the future. The goals of the 2010 era will most likely not be fullfilled due to the fact that there are more obese people and more people that are having eating disorders.

I believe the mission of Healthy People 2020 needs to take a different approach than they have over the previous years. They need to ADVERTISE who they are, and what they do. That's why the majority of the population hasn't heard of them... and this is something that every citizen should know about. Would it hurt to make a commercial or three?

One point in the mission statement of Health People 2020 is to identify critical research and data collection needs. As a current MPH student, I believe more research should be focused in the area of bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, that have developed multiple-resistance to antibiotics. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics is an issue that needs to be addressed more avidly by the public health workforce before there is a widespread outbreak involving highly resistant bacteria.

I think that Healthy People: 2010 is a great idea because it summarizes all aspects of life that can be improved, which will inevitably lead to an increase in the quality of life and, in turn, increase the average lifespan. This development of national health objectives and goals is insignificant in my eyes in that it is poorly publicized, promoted and spaced out over a decade in a time that medical advances in healthcare are changing on a daily basis. I think that more community efforts need to be put forth in making uneducated people aware of these goals and efforts due to the fact that they are less likely to come across this information and would most certainly be the majority of the proposed population in our collaborative efforts. I think that not only should goals be made more frequently, but, we as a nation should be made MORE aware of our progress/regression in order to give us a sense of where we stand and what more we need to do in order to accomplish our goals if not achieved already. I believe if we do this Healthy People 2020 will be better achieved than Healthy People 2010.

The issue of health inequities should be of primary consideration in the development of Health People 2020. Access to high quality health care, as defined by peer-reviewed evidence should be a cornerstone of any health initiative.

The mission and purpose of Healthy People should also be informed by and serve the work of health care providers, public health professionals, health and reproductive health advocates, and intermediary liaisons between patients and the healthcare system, such as outreach coordinators and promotoras de salud. The draft statements that define the mission should include the health inequities that exist in our country when conducting public awareness, as they are not well explained in the media and deserves priority attention in public education. Lastly, the health results that the Healthy People initiative seeks to accomplish should be more clearly defined.

Special consideration should be made for the growing aging population in America. (20% of the population in 2020 will be over 65) This population is vulnerable and impacted by the elements of a healthy life style, nutrition and activity. Older adults have specific nutritional needs to address, additionally they have more barriers to obtaining health information. Seniors utilize the medical network more than any other specific poulation group. By all means address children and families but please do not forget the invisible senior population.
