There's no doubt about it -- these past couple of years have been super-heated in the startup world, with Facebook IPO and with multi-millions of dollars flowing at new, young and untested ideas. In general, the press coverage of this scene has been pretty sunny, but now in December, as the tech press looks back at the year that was, a bit of snark has infiltrated the normally positive tone.

It's that time of year again -- that moment where we look back, take stock, reflect and make a whole new set of resolutions and goals for the New Year.
I know that 2012 was a big year for me -- it was the year that I finally took the plunge and went into business for myself. I have nothing but respect for designers. For a long time in my career, I was a copywriter, and so I often worked collaboratively with designers to realize a concept to present to a potential client. There is a lot of back-and-forth, perfections, revision, and of course in order to be successful in design, you have to have a thick skin!
I met Firat Parlak, the Chief Entrepreneurial Officer and driving force behind the design and development firm Awesome, at a meeting of the North Brooklyn Breakfast Club, a networking group for techies and entrepreneurs.
