Vaccination Coverage and Surveillance:
School and Childcare Vaccination Surveys
States and U.S. territories enact laws or regulations that require children to receive certain vaccines before they enter child care facilities and/or school (kindergarten/first grade, middle school, high school, college). They report the results of periodic assessments of vaccination coverage in child care facilities and the results of annual reviews of vaccination records in schools, conducted at the beginning of each school year.
It's important to know that not all states and U.S. territories report coverage information and may have different child care or school entry vaccination requirements and different types of exemptions from these requirements.

This tool provides state vaccination requirements, state exemptions, and links to state web sites reporting requirements.
Each year, states and other grantees are asked to provide an update of any changes in childcare and school entry vaccination requirements. This annual update reflects state laws, regulations, or rules that impose vaccination requirements for enrollment and attendance in childcare facilities, kindergartens, middle schools, and colleges. Allowable vaccination exemptions are included.

A research study funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) – 317 Prevention and Wellness Fund* to understand how state and local immunization programs monitor vaccination coverage and school exemption among kindergarteners. This study attempts to achieve this goal by identifying barriers and facilitators to increase kindergarten vaccination coverage and decrease exemption rates; achieving standardized strategies in how kindergarten vaccination coverage and exemption rates are monitored across state and local immunization programs; and identifying and implementing appropriate strategies to address the barriers. - Archived Survey of School and Childcare Assessment Practices
