Francis Mahaney, Jr. is the medical science writer for the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD). He is responsible for writing articles about the activities and science of CRCHD, as well as being involved in print and television news media. He is the liaison with NCI and NIH press offices, NIH photography and exhibit services.

Before coming to the CRCHD, Mr. Mahaney was a newspaper correspondent from 1974-1984 at the Washington Star, the Kansas City Star, and the Washington Post, where he covered metropolitan news, police and courts. He then served as the press spokesman for National Cancer Institute from 1984-1996.

Mr. Mahaney graduated with a double major (B.A.) in American history and print journalism from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1977. He then went on to graduate in l981 from an Ophthalmic Surgical Technologist Program in the Department of Ophthalmology, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. His clinical O.T. rotations included Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C. Children's Hospital National Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

He has been awarded the William Randolph Hearst Journalism Award for news excellence in l976 for an in-depth profile on Howard Hughs' childhood. He has also received the Smithsonian Institution- Certificate of Appreciation, Board of Regents for contributions in expanding the public's knowledge of American History, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-PHS Special Achievement Award in recognition and appreciation of extraordinary contributions to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
