Susana Calderon, M.P.H.

Regional Women's Health Coordinator
(Region VIII)

Ms. Calderon received a Master of Public Health degree from Tulane University and a dual bachelor’s degree in Spanish literature and anthropology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has an array of public health experience, from working as a bilingual counselor for victims of domestic violence, to epidemiologic research, to HIV/AIDS prevention and education and nutrition.

As the regional women’s health coordinator, Ms. Calderon works with federal, state, and local departments of health, community-based organizations, and professional associations in Region VIII (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota) to support women’s and girls’ health initiatives. Her responsibilities include: Coordinating the Regional Inter-agency Women’s Health Taskforce, coordinating the Region VIII women’s health partners conference calls, collaborating with the Region VIII Coalition for a Healthier Community grantees, and participating in the Office on Women's Health internship program to support public service recruitment opportunities.

From 2006-2008, Ms. Calderon served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua, focusing on HIV/AIDS and reproductive health issues. In 2005, she was selected to participate in the Hispanic Serving Health Professionals internship with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There, Ms. Calderon put together a guide for health care providers who treat tuberculosis in large immigrant populations in the United States. Prior to coming to the HHS Region VIII office, she worked as a program specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service, on the National School Lunch Program.
