FDA Unveils New Section of the FDA Web site for Recalls Data and Other Agency Data Sets
As part of making data available through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Open Government Initiative, FDA has created a new section of the FDA Web site for agency data sets. The new section includes all available downloadable data for major recalls from 2009 to present based on information provided by firms in press releases, including data on the recent Shell Egg recall. The new gateway features data sets in XML format, which allows developers to easily create applications and mashups centered around FDA data.
You can check out the data sets here. Let us know what you think by leaving a comment on this blog or sending an email to webmail@oc.fda.gov, subject line “FDA Data Gateway Feedback.” As we look ahead, we are interested in your ideas about the data provided and how that data is organized.

Its good to see this info being made more available (or more conveient to find) by adding this section. Recall data can be handy to know in certain cases..
An excellent idea long over due. A good resource for anyone connected to the medical field.
I also think this is a good idea, but I didn’t see this program televised or on the radio. I think the public should be made more aware of this resource. I also think that you the FDA, should provide a forum where by the public can voice their opinion about things like gmo’s and other products that we either approve or disapprove of.
I failed to mention that I think it would be a great benefit to the American public if some of the companies who have products that are recalled be held more accountable to the FDA. We don’t need a catastrophe where there is loss of life just to hear some ceo say oppps.
This is a great start, but where is the recall data from pre 2009? To get this another way, one has to submit a FOIA request, taking weeks.
I think it’s about time FDA do something to better inform consumers! Unfortunately, people don’t have infinite amounts of time to browse their website, so this information should be presented by media sources as well.
They should have done this long ago! They need to start releasing such data through social media, as that’s how most of today’s population gets its daily dose information
What you’re saying is completely true. I know that everybody must say the same thing, but I just think that you put it in a way that everyone can understand. I also love the images you put in here. They fit so well with what you’re trying to say. I’m sure you’ll reach so many people with what you’ve got to say.
Internet now has been an influential in terms of marketing and data distribution. Hope we can help guys to this data networking. If its reaches on people then the effect would be great. Social Media networking or Article marketing would be a good tactics!
Spot on with this write-up, I really assume this website needs way more consideration. I’ll probably be once more to read far more, thanks for that info.
This is really a useful dataset. It would be more useful if there is a way to identify drug vs food recalls in the xml dataset.
The recalls xml data set doesnt contain any information about whether it’s food or drug recall.. it would be really useful to write applications against this data.
I think for those who are aware of the dangers of contaminated foods and drugs, and the recall of the same is vital. An incident happened to me a month ago. I went to the store and purchased some spinach and by the time I got home the grocery store had called and informed me of the recall on that item and it was because of my using a store discount card where they had my information on file. I think that all the resources that will help keep the public safe is very valuable and the simplest forms are the best. There are many people who don’t know what xml or excel is.

Data set access on recalls is all very nice but I’m not especially concerned with items that have been recalled but rather more with those that have been approved. I’d like to see access to data sets on approved items so that I am able to see the information that an approval is based upon.
It is the best time to make some plans for the future and it
is time to be happy. I have read this post and if I could I desire
to suggest you few interesting things or tips.
Perhaps you can write next articles referring to this
article. I want to read even more things about it!
