Surviving the First 3 Seconds:  

This Officer Safety Training Course provides students with basic skills in recognizing the characteristics of an armed individual during interactions with the public.  Common characteristics associated with human behavior that will enable students to more rapidly recognize, identify, and articulate the ever present dangers presented by assailants through verbal and non-verbal cues will be discussed.  The goal of this training is to enhance street level interrogation skills to promote effective communication.  

Hidden Weapons – Sanding your slide to avoid the splinters during the ride:  

This Officer Safety Training Course will identify common ad uncommon concealment areas in household items, internet purchased items, altered devices and specially designed armaments all made with criminal intent to conceal dangerous weapons.  This course will also give specific reminders of Officer Safety and tactical advantage procedures.  Students will gain knowledge and concepts where concealed dangerous weapons can be placed within numerous items.  Varieties of tools will be shown so that the students can comprehend how they are used to discover concealed weapons. 

Who Should Attend

Applicants must be federal, state, local, campus or tribal criminal justice professionals, law enforcement personnel, or domestic violence advocates from rural jurisdictions.

Eligibility

Preference for admission into this program is given to non-federal law enforcement officers or other emergency responders working in rural areas. “Rural” is defined as any area outside of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA), as defined by the Office of Management and Budget; or any jurisdiction inside of a MSA located in a county, borough, parish, or land under the jurisdiction of an Indian Tribe with a population of no more than 50,000. Non-rural applicants will be admitted on a space-available basis beginning approximately 35 days prior to the program’s start date.
