Officer Survival Workshop

This program addresses officer safety by examining the four most common causes of law enforcement fatalities and how an officer’s natural instincts can be both an asset and a liability. The following topics are presented in a very dynamic format utilizing video, meaningful statistics, case studies and interesting personal experiences to impress upon attendees that their personal safety and career survival truly is up to them:

  • The role of the unconscious mind in officer safety
  • Reality of violent encounters and tactical options
  • Visualization and Preparation
  • Active shooter considerations and use of force tactics
  • Traffic stop strategies and squad car positioning
  • Pursuit issues and consequences (emotional, criminal, civil)
  • Risk Management: Roadway hazards
  • Street interviews, body language and proxemics
  • Emotional survival and a healthy off-duty perspective
  • Pre-attack indicators and deception cues

Who Should Attend

Applicants must be federal, state, local, campus or tribal criminal justice professionals, law enforcement personnel, or domestic violence advocates from rural jurisdictions.

Eligibility

Preference for admission into this program is given to non-federal law enforcement officers or other emergency responders working in rural areas. “Rural” is defined as any area outside of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA), as defined by the Office of Management and Budget; or any jurisdiction inside of a MSA located in a county, borough, parish, or land under the jurisdiction of an Indian Tribe with a population of no more than 50,000. Non-rural applicants will be admitted on a space-available basis beginning approximately 35 days prior to the program’s start date.

Attendees are responsible for all travel, lodging and meal expenses.
