Threat Assessment and Management Training Seminar (TAMTS)

This course, designed by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), provides an understanding of threatening communications investigations. Threat Assessments, as an applied technique, continue to develop and grow in the law enforcement community. Changes in legislation and lobbying efforts by victim advocates have placed an increasing awareness to the challenges of managing individuals who present threats at home, work and to the community.

This course will train the officer in identifying and analyzing threats, offer interview/interrogation strategies and help the investigator in his/her approach to threat cases. These techniques relate to threats of violence from terrorism, school violence, sexual crimes, stalking, cyber crimes (cyber stalking), domestic violence, arson, sabotage, communicated threats, insider threats, pre-attack behavior, unsolicited communications of threats and a myriad of other incidents.

Curriculum

The student will learn to analyze, recognize and manage individuals who present threats. The topics that will be covered are:

  • Violence assessment (behavioral antecedents, indicators & patterns of escalation towards targeted violence);
  • Evaluation of threatening, intimidating, and harassing statements/behaviors;
  • Analysis of stalking behavior;
  • Interview strategies for perpetrators and victims;
  • Consultation with mental health professionals;
  • Recommendations for interviews, collecting, and evaluation critical collateral data regarding the threats;
  • History and Definition of Terrorism;

  • Homegrown Threats & Self Radicalization;

  • Detecting & Defeating Terrorism Tactics, Techniques & Procedures; and,

  • Protecting the homeland.

Tuition and Cost

Tuition is FREE. Students will be responsible for travel, lodging and meals.

For the Jacksonville, FL training program ONLY: Lodging will be provided on a first come, first served basis for qualified students who work more than 50 miles from the training location.

Prerequisites for Attendance

Applicants must be sworn law enforcement officers from state, local, campus, or tribal agencies.
