Analyzing Gang Activity

This course concentrates on the basic information necessary to understand street gangs and their objectives. The course discusses the strategies and methods for law enforcement officers to gather intelligence and determine the existence of gangs within their respective communities. The course stresses how to handle contacts with gang members on the street and methods for interviewing suspected gang members. Emphasis on the use of technology and the means for developing a macro view of a particular gang are also discussed. The methods and tactics associated with identifying and suppressing gang activities is a major focus of the course. The student learns how to include the extensive use of community resources to develop strategies in order to suppress and interrupt gang activity. Prosecution and legal issues relating to gang criminal acts are also highlighted during the course.

Who Should Attend

Qualified applicants must be full-time, sworn law enforcement peace officers.

Eligibility

This program is being funded by the FLETC’s Rural Policing Institute. Preference for admission into this program is given to non-federal law enforcement officers or other emergency responders working in rural areas. “Rural” is defined as any area outside of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA), as defined by the Office of Management and Budget; or any jurisdiction inside of a MSA located in a county, borough, parish or land under the jurisdiction of an Indian Tribe with a population of no more than 50,000. Non-rural applicants will be admitted on a space-available basis approximately 35 days prior to the program’s start date.

Cost

TUITION-FREE Attendees are responsible for all travel, lodging and meal expenses.
