Gangs in Indian Country

This training program examines every facet of the street gang subculture and provides valuable insight into why individuals become involved in gang behavior, how gang behavior is manifested and what law enforcement agencies, individuals, schools and communities can do to impact the problem. Topics to be covered include:

Part I: The Gangster Mentality

  • An overview of the national gang problem
  • The myths and truths of the street gang subculture
  • The gangster mentality and gang value system
  • Contributing factors and motivators to gang involvement
  • Gang violence and gang weaponry
  • The impact of gang activity on families, schools, communities and individuals.

Part II: Gang Recognition and Identification

  • National major gang trends and the “hybrid gang” connection
  • Strategies for effectively addressing gang activity through suppression, intervention and prevention
  • Gang identification and recognition: Graffiti, Hand Signs, Clothing Styles, Body Markings, Symbolism 
  • A profile of street and prison gang activity across Indian Country: major national trends
  • The gang and drug connection in Indian Country

Who Should Attend

Qualified applicants must be full-time, sworn law enforcement peace officers.

Eligibility

Preference for admission into this program is given to non-federal law enforcement officers or other emergency responders working in rural areas. “Rural” is defined as any area outside of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA), as defined by the Office of Management and Budget; or any jurisdiction inside of a MSA located in a county, borough, parish or land under the jurisdiction of an Indian Tribe with a population of no more than 50,000.  Please visit Eligibility Requirements for more information.

Non-rural applicants will be admitted on a space-available basis approximately 35 days prior to the program’s start date.

Attendees are responsible for all travel, lodging and meal expenses.
