Report Writing, Evidence Documentation & Evidence Packaging

The purpose of this course is to identify components and develop skills of a well written and organized report for law enforcement personnel necessary to document incidents and meet the needs of all who will utilize the report. At the end of this program, students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the important components of a police report and the many uses of the report itself. An emphasis will be placed on documenting the incident in a way that is useful to the criminal justice system as a whole and will minimize officer and agency liability.

  1. Identify the essential components of a well-written police report to best facilitate a thorough and effective investigation.
  2. Understand the impact of a well written report upon successful prosecutions, offender accountability, victim safety and department and officer liability.
  3. Identify and utilize a standard report writing format.
  4. Identify and utilize additional items needed when documenting confrontational incidents
  5. Identify and utilize a clear sentence structure formula.
  6. Understand the benefits of a well-organized report.

Who Should Attend

Qualified applicants must be full-time, sworn law enforcement peace officers.

Eligibility

This program is being funded by the FLETC’s Rural Policing Institute. Preference for admission into this program is given to non-federal law enforcement officers or other emergency responders working in rural areas. “Rural” is defined as any area outside of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA), as defined by the Office of Management and Budget; or any jurisdiction inside of a MSA located in a county, borough, parish or land under the jurisdiction of an Indian Tribe with a population of no more than 50,000. Non-rural applicants may be admitted on a space-available basis approximately 35 days prior to the program’s start date.

Cost

TUITION-FREE Attendees are responsible for all travel, lodging and meal expenses.
