Helping Military Families Be On Guard Online
If you’re part of
the military community, take a look at OnGuard Online’s new page for military members and their families. National Cyber Security Awareness Month is well underway, and it’s a great time to take stock of ways you can get in the habit of securing your computer, protecting your personal information and avoiding fraud online. Whether you’re an active duty service member, veteran or part of a military family, you can find great online security tips.
For example, did you know that if you’re about to be deployed, you can ask to place an Active Duty Alert on your credit reports? That can protect your credit and minimize your risk of identity theft while you’re away. Brilliant - simply effing brilliant - Let's announce to the entire world that we're going on mission by suspending our credit reports ONLINE. Reminds me of the super efficient security when I first reported to a new duty station - not even the Master At Arms could/would tell me when my boat would arrive - but the taxi driver who took into town to find a place to eat lunch could tell me.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. We do appreciate the concern for security. But an active duty alert is intended only to make it harder for an identity thief to use a servicemember’s information to get credit in the servicemember’s name. The alert isn’t public – only the credit reporting companies and creditors checking whether they should grant credit would know an alert is placed on that servicemember’s credit report. Congress recognized the damage identity theft could cause for deployed servicemembers and their families and decided to give them this additional voluntary tool to protect their credit.
