    NIH Back-up Care Seminars — Wednesday, January 30

    "In-Home Back-up Care: Try It, You’ll Like It" will be presented on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, Noon - 1:00 pm in Building 31/6C, Room 10. The benefits of using in-home care and the qualifications of the providers will be reviewed. There will be discussion about how to prepare for in-home care and the expectations of caregivers and parents. This seminar will be webcast live. This seminar and past seminars, covering a variety of child and adult/elder care issues/concerns, are also archived and available by visiting the NIH Child Care Website.     Cholesterol and Glucose Screening

    The R&W and Occupational Medical Services (OMS) at NIH are working together to offer both Glucose & Total Cholesterol Screening. This screening is available in Bldg. 10 in the 6th floor clinic Rm. 6C306 on Tuesday mornings from 8-11am. The full lipid profile (cholesterol) test is $16.50 and the glucose test is $8.25. Purchase a screening ticket at any R&W store before you plan to be tested and take it with you for any Tuesday screening. Because this is a fasting test, participants should not eat or drink anything (except water) for at least nine hours prior to having the test.

    Demystifying Medicine Series — begins January 8

    The course is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. There is no fee nor is there academic credit. However, those attending more than 50% of sessions and who pass an electronic multiple choice exam receive a certificate at the conclusion of the Course. Sessions are every Tuesday, 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the ground floor auditorium of Building 50. For more information, see the Web site.

    At this time of year, employees should review their annual leave balances, with the carryover (240 hours for non-SES members) limitation in mind. Annual leave in excess of the carryover limitation is considered "use or lose" annual leave and must be used before the end of the leave year (Saturday, January 12, 2013) to avoid forfeiture.     NIH Chamber Singers Holiday Concerts — Saturday, December 8, Sunday, December 9, and Wednesday, December 12

    The NIH Chamber Singers will hold a holiday concert on Saturday, December 8, from 3-4 p.m. on at the Marilyn J. Praisner/Fairland Library (14910 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD). On Wednesday, December 12, at noon, they will perform a variety of holiday tunes in several styles, in the Atrium of the Clinical Research Center (Bldg. 10). The final concert will be a special performance of the Christmas one-act opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors," during the 11 a.m. Sunday service on December 9 at the North Chevy Chase Christian Church (8814 Kensington Parkway, Chevy Chase, MD).     The NIH Philharmonia Orchestra will present at 7:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church (917 Montrose Rd., Rockville, MD).     CFC Zumbathon — Fundraising Event for the NIH CFC Campaign — Wednesday, November 14

    Zumba incorporates Latin and international music including salsa, merengue, rock and hip hop with dance moves. The class format combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body in an aerobic/fitness fashion to achieve a unique blended balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits. The event will be held at the Loft (Trailer T-39) from 5pm - 7pm. Come dance and workout for a good cause. All participants are requested to contribute a small donation.     Foil the Flu — Influenza Vaccination Program

    The 2012-2013 schedule is now available on the Foil the Flu Web site. The location of this year's on-campus vaccination clinic is the Hatfield Clinical Research Center, Building 10, 7th Floor Atrium, East Side. (In the Hatfield CRC, take the central elevators adjacent to Admissions/Patient Travel to the 7th floor.) All Federal employees and contractors with a valid NIH identification badge will be provided the seasonal flu vaccine free of charge, while supplies last.     NIH Research Festival Lunch Registration — Wednesday, October 10

    This year's Research Festival lunch will be held in a tent near the Natcher Conference Center cafeteria, Building 45. The local food vendors will be The Bean Bag, Hard Times, Hollywood East Cafe, Ledo Pizza, Rocklands Barbeque, and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Music will be provided by NIHJAZZ. Tickets are $5. Reserve your spot — be sure to enter your e-mail address properly, in order to receive your confirmation, which you must bring on the day of the event along with $5 cash and an ID to receive your meal ticket. You cannot enter the tent without a ticket. There will be five seatings between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. There are a limited number of tickets, and you may reserve only one spot.

    Cholesterol and Glucose Screening

    The R&W and Occupational Medical Services (OMS) at NIH are working together to offer both Glucose & Total Cholesterol Screening. This screening is available in Bldg. 10 in the 6th floor clinic Rm. 6C306 on Tuesday mornings from 8-11am. The full lipid profile (cholesterol) test is $16.50 and the glucose test is $8.25. Purchase a screening ticket at any R&W store before you plan to be tested and take it with you for any Tuesday screening. Because this is a fasting test, participants should not eat or drink anything (except water) for at least nine hours prior to having the test.
