About 434,000 Americans die each year from smoking. Smoking causes cancer, strokes, heart disease, and lung disease.

When you quit, you will:

  • Be healthier.
  • Have more energy.
  • Breathe easier.

Also, the people you live with will be healthier.

To be a successful quitter, you need to make a plan. Set a quit date and stick to it.

You can buy medicine, like nicotine gum, at the drugstore or visit your doctor to get a prescription for medicine to help you quit.

You can get help. Ask family, friends, and coworkers for support. Call the National Quitline at 1-800-QUITNOW (784-8669) or select www.smokefree.gov for help.

You can change your behaviors. When you get the urge to smoke, take a walk or talk to someone.

Don’t quit quitting. Many people try several times before they finally quit. Don’t give up.
