Marine Training FAQs

What clothes or equipment should I bring to the program?

A uniform issue, consisting of pants, shirts, nylon jacket, and sweatshirt is provided to you while participating in this program. With this uniform you will need your personal shoes, socks and underwear. Also, provided for underway exercises will be a PFD and/or exposure suit, shorts, gear bag, goggles, and rain gear. Non-marking boat shoes or boots are required. Other clothing considerations will be for your personal time after class and on the weekends.  Bring appropriate clothes for the climatic time of the year. 

If you plan to use the gym, track, pool, or weight room facilities while at the FLETC, you need only bring appropriate sport shoes. All gym clothes and swimsuits are provided and required to be worn.

All students are issued a hand-held GPS receiver. If you have one and would rather use it, please feel free to bring it.

All equipment used during the program will be furnished by the Center and there is really no need to bring much else.  The following items will be useful during certain environmental conditions and should be brought with you:

  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray
  • Ball Cap (Agency)
  • Wool or stocking cap
  • Gloves

What if I need health care or emergency treatment?

The on-site Health Unit and Athletic Trainers Office (ATO) provides care for illness, training injuries & treatment, and rehabilitation. The Health Unit is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the ATO is open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the last patient treatment begins at 5:30 p.m. Treatments are also given during lunch time. For more serious injuries or illnesses students may be referred to a local health care facility.

How can I prepare myself before arriving at the FLETC?

Be ready mentally and physically for a very comprehensive training program both in the classroom and during underway exercises.

On the first day of all programs, you will be requested to fill out a health screening questionnaire.  Pulse and blood pressure will also be monitored. If you have any condition or injury that you think might be questioned by the Health Unit officials, please bring a statement from your physician giving you clearance to participate in the training. Otherwise, you may not be allowed to attend the program.

The Marine Law Enforcement Training Program (MLETP) will provide you with about 90% of all subjects necessary to test for a U. S. Coast Guard license (Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessel or higher). If you are interested in pursuing this license, it is recommended that you contact your local U.S.C.G. Regional Exam Center (REC) prior to attending the program and schedule an examination date as soon after the program as possible.

What climatic conditions should I expect?

The climate at the FLETC is relatively mild year-round with a mean temperature of 68 degrees. Temperatures may reach the mid 90's during the summer months, and down to the 20's in the winter months (January and February).  Humidity is high year-round.

What types of vessels will I be operating during training?

 All Marine Programs utilize 25' to 33' vessels with twin outboard or inboard/outboard engines.
