Training Tools for Healthy Schools

Promoting Health and Academic Success

Workshops Available

CDC has created Training Tools for Healthy Schools: Promoting Health and Academic Success (formerly known as the DASH Training Network, or “D-Train”), a national cadre of master trainers to provide workshops on using and implementing CDC's school health tools.

These limited, free workshops offer:

  • A systematic way to assess and improve school health policies and programs
  • More information about national standards for health or physical education
  • Help revising your current health or physical education curriculum
  • Help aligning schools in your state or region with CDC's guidelines to promote healthy eating and physical activity

Training Tools for Healthy Schools

School Health Index: A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide (SHI)

The SHI can help schools assess the strengths and weaknesses of their health policies and programs and develop an action plan to improve them.

Physical Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (PECAT)

The PECAT can help schools and districts revise, select, or develop a quality physical education curriculum.

Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT)

The HECAT can help schools and districts revise, select, or develop a quality health education curriculum.

School Health Guidelines to Promote Healthy Eating and Physical Activity

The School Health Guidelines to Promote Healthy Eating and Physical Activity can help schools develop, implement, and evaluate healthy eating and physical activity policies and practices for students.

How to Request a Workshop

To request a free workshop, follow these three easy steps.

  1. Determine if you meet the following eligibility criteria:
    • You are a state or local health and/or education agency that would like to host a workshop for schools or districts in your locality. Note: Individual schools are not eligible to host workshops.
    • You are able to offer a minimum of 4 hours of training time. Note: Workshops can range from a minimum of 4 hours to a maximum of 8 hours.
  2. Complete the Workshop Request Form for the workshop(s) you would like to offer.
  3. E-mail your completed form(s) to TTHS@cdc.gov. You will then be contacted and informed if your request has been accepted. Next steps will also be provided.

After receiving a training request, a CDC-qualified trainer will design a workshop to meet your needs and come to your site. If approved, CDC will pay for all expenses associated with the trainer (e.g., travel expenses, lodging, per diem, and honorarium). However, the workshop coordinator will need to cover any additional costs associated with the facility, copying of certain materials, and refreshments. In addition, the workshop coordinator will be responsible for following up with participants up to 12 months following the workshop, to gain information regarding specific steps and actions accomplished, and report back to CDC. Further information regarding the follow up process will be explained to the workshop coordinator once the request has been approved.

For questions, please review the Frequently Asked Questions or e-mail TTHS@cdc.gov.
