Presidential $1 Coin Lesson Plans (Benjamin Harrison)
Overview
Students will learn about the Electoral College and the accomplishments of Benjamin Harrison through his Presidential $1 Coin.
Activity
Have the students research Benjamin Harrison to learn about his accomplishments while serving as our country’s 23rd President. Start with the October Coin of the Month to learn more about Benjamin Harrison.
Have the students research Harrison’s major accomplishments during his presidency. Discuss the fact that Benjamin Harrison was elected president even though he received fewer votes than his opponent.
Using information from class discussions and classroom resources, have the students research the history and purpose of the Electoral College. Invite the students to record their findings in a graphic organizer and write summary statements connecting their research with the outcome of President Harrison’s election.
