MISSION STATEMENT

The overall goal of the workshop is to provide recommendations for applied research and education in detecting coronary heart disease (CHD) in women. This goal will be accomplished by bringing together experts in CHD detection in women as well as experts in research translation and health communications. The workshop is planned in collaboration with investigators of major studies /databases to facilitate an interactive forum addressing present research concerns and recommending novel, research directions and clinical application. Steering committee chairpersons are Drs. Noel Bairey Merz and Robert Bonow.

The specific workshop objectives are to:

1. Review results from the WISE study and other CHD studies in women to improve our understanding of gender differences in the manifestation and detection of cardiac ischemia;
2. Foster exchange of novel ideas between scientists and experts in applied science and education;
3. Identify key research results for translation into clinical practice; and
4. Provide recommendations on gender-based education for health professionals, patients, and the public.

The workshop will also provide an opportunity to develop a unified and comprehensive strategy for CHD education in women, including enhancing translation and education for the public and health professionals regarding women's health issues as it relates to recognition of ischemic presentations and early symptoms of acute myocardial infarction. This workshop is not intended as a consensus conference.

The workshops will target the following areas:

•  Diagnosis of Stable Ischemia and CHD
•  Ischemia: Pathophysiology vs. Gender
•  Diagnosis of Acute Cardiac Ischemia: Gender issues
•  Lessons from Hormone Replacement Trials
•  Gender Related Risk Factors for CHD
•  Key Messages About Heart Disease Symptoms in Women and Recommendations for Clinical Practice and Public Education
•  New Frontiers in Detection of CHD in Women

The discussions of the key topics will provide a base for drafting recommendations. At the end of the workshop, the recommendations will be prioritized, and formalized. The final draft will be submitted for publication.

It is anticipated the workshop will provide a unique opportunity to chart a new course for applied research in CHD in women and provide an updated science-based message about early recognition of CHD in women.
