bulletOther Items of Interest

New Dataset Available: The Women's Angiographic and Estrogen Trial (WAVE)
WAVE examined the efficacy of estrogen replacement and antioxidant vitamins for preventing angiographic progression of coronary artery disease. After a mean interval of 2.8 years, neither HRT nor antioxidant vitamin supplements provided cardiovascular benefit in postmenopausal women with coronary disease. Instead, a potential for harm was suggested with each treatment.(JAMA 2002; 288:2432-40)

The Fourth Report on the Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents
On the basis of developing evidence, it is now apparent that primary hypertension is detectable in the young and occurs commonly. The long-term health risks for hypertensive children and adolescents can be substantial; therefore, it is important that clinical measures be taken to reduce these risks and optimize health outcomes. The purpose of this report is to update clinicians on the latest scientific evidence regarding BP in children and to provide recommendations for diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of hypertension based on available evidence and consensus expert opinion of the working group when evidence was lacking.

2004 National Cholesterol Education Month Kit
Cholesterol Month 2004 extends the theme, "Know your cholesterol numbers, know your risk." This theme emphasizes two of the main thrusts of the cholesterol guidelines: the importance of having your cholesterol measured and knowing your risk of developing heart disease. The online format of the kit makes it easy to access and disseminate information on cholesterol.
