Freedom of Information Act Handbook

Policy

It is the policy of the United States Mint that all Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests: be made in writing; state that it is made pursuant to the FOIA; include information that will enable the processing office to determine the fee category of the user; clearly state the records requested; include a firm agreement from the requester to pay fees for search, duplication or review, as appropriate; and be addressed to the Disclosure Officer, United States Mint, 801 9th Street, N.W., 8th Floor, Washington, D.C. 20220.  A determination regarding the request will be made within twenty (20) business days after receipt of any such request.  Records will be disclosed unless they are appropriate for withholding under one or more of the FOIA exemptions (see "Exemptions for Withholding Records Under the FOIA" for a discussion of the FOIA exemptions).

Expedited processing will be made available when a requestor demonstrates a "compelling need" (e.g., immediate threat to the life or physical safety of an individual, or other urgency).  When a request for expedited processing is received, the Disclosure Officer will make a determination whether to grant the request, and will notify the requestor within ten (10) calendar days of the request.

Certain records may also be obtained electronically, without a written FOIA request, via the U.S. Mint's Internet Web site.  The Internet address for the Mint's Web site is http://www.usmint.gov.

Mint Directive MD 7B-7 provides the regulations and procedures, in detail, used for implementing the requirements of the FOIA by the United States Mint. Mint Directive MD 7B-7 may be obtained by contacting the Disclosure Officer, United States Mint, Washington, D.C. 20220 or via the Mint's Electronic Reading Room.

The Treasury Government Information Locator Service (GILS), established in 1996, is another source for obtaining agency information and record locator systems.  GILS records identify public information resources within the Federal Government, describe the information available in these resources, and assist in obtaining the information.  The Internet address for the GILS Web site is http://www.gpoaccess.gov/gils/index.html.
