Should I convert my home movies to video tape?

Transferring home movies to video tape offers many advantages for easy viewing but should not be considered a preservation option.

The magnetic tape used for video recordings does not have a long life expectancy, and video formats tend to become obsolete relatively quickly. Due to both of these problems, the original home movie film is likely to last longer than the video tape copy.

Store your home movies properly so that they last a long time. Have a video copy made so that you can view the home movies without damaging to the original films.
