| K-24 | Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research
To provide support for clinicians to allow them protected time to devote to patient-oriented research and to act as mentors for beginning clinical investigators. The target candidates are outstanding clinical scientists engaged in patient-oriented research who are within 15 years of their specialty training, who can demonstrate the need for a period of intensive research focus as a means of enhancing their clinical research careers, and who are committed to mentoring the next generation of clinical investigators in patient-oriented research. | K-99/R-00 | Howard Temin Pathway to Independence Award
The NIH Pathway to Independence Award provides an opportunity for promising postdoctoral scientists to receive both mentored and independent research support from the same award. The initial phase will provide 1-2 years of mentored support for highly promising, postdoctoral research scientists followed by up to 3 years of independent support contingent on securing an independent research position. | P-30 | Center Core Grants
To support shared use of resources and facilities for categorical research by investigators from different disciplines who provide a multidisciplinary approach to a joint research effort, or by investigators from the same discipline who focus on a common research problem. The core grant is integrated with the center's component projects or Program Projects, though funded independently from them. This support, by providing more accessible resources, is expected to assure greater productivity than that provided through the separate projects and Program Projects. To support any part of the full range of research and development from very basic to clinical; may involve ancillary supportive activities such as protracted patient care necessary to the primary research or R & D effort. The spectrum of activities comprise a multidisciplinary attack on a specific disease entity or biomedical problem area. There grants differ from program project grants in that they are usually developed in response to an announcement of the programmatic needs to an Institute or Division and subsequently receive continuous attention from staff. Centers may also serve as regional or national resources for special research purposes. | R-01 | Research Project
Grants are awarded to institutions to allow a Principal Investigator to pursue a scientific focus or objective in his or her area of interest and competence. Institutional sponsorship assures the NIH that the institution will provide facilities necessary to conduct the research and will be accountable for the grant funds. | R-03 | Small Research Grants
Small grants provide research support, specifically limited in time and amount, for activities such as pilot projects, testing of new techniques, or feasibility studies of innovative, high-risk research, which would provide a basis for more extended research. Program Announcements NIH Guidelines |
| R-13 | Conference Grants
NCI assists in funding conferences relevant to its mission. Generally, such awards are limited to participation with other organizations in supporting conferences rather than providing sole support. Prospective applicants are urged to initiate contact no later than 6 weeks before submission of their application. The conference must occur more than 6 months after the receipt date deadline, in order for the application and its review to be considered by the NCI's council and possibly awarded if sufficiently meritorious. A sufficiently meritorious R13 application can only be awarded after completion of the appropriate meeting of the NCI’s council (i.e., the one at which it and its associated summary statement from peer review are presented) and before the start of the conference for which funding is requested. | R-15 | The NIH Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREA)
To enhance the research environment of educational institutions that have not been traditional recipients of NIH research funds, this award provides limited funds to those institutions' faculty members to develop new research projects or expand ongoing research activities in health sciences and to encourage students to participate in the research activity. To provide a second phase for support of innovative exploratory and developmental research activities initiated under the R21 mechanism. Although only R21 awardees are generally eligible to apply for R33 support, specific program initiatives may establish eligibility criteria under which applications could be accepted from applicants who demonstrate program competency equivalent to that expected under R33. | R-34 | Clinical Trial Planning Grant
To provide support for the initial development of a clinical trial, including the establishment of the research team; the development of tools for data management and oversight of the research; and, the development of a trial design and other essential elements of the study, such as the protocol, recruitment strategies, and procedure manuals. |
| R-36 | Dissertation Award
To support dissertation research costs of students in accredited research doctoral programs in the United States (including Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories or possessions). Dissertation awards are not renewable. |
| R-37 | Method to Extend Research in Time (MERIT) Award
To provide long-term grant support to investigators whose research competence and productivity are distinctly superior and who are highly likely to continue to perform in an outstanding manner. Investigators may not apply for a MERIT award. Program staff and/or members of the cognizant National Advisory Council/Board will identify candidates for the MERIT award during the course of review of competing research grant applications prepared and submitted in accordance with regular PHS requirements. |
| Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs The NIH welcomes grant applications from small businesses in any biomedical or behavioral research area as described in the solicitations below. Support under the SBIR program is normally provided for 6 months/$100,000 for Phase I, and 2 years/$500,000 for Phase II. However, applicants may propose longer periods of time and greater amounts of funds necessary for completion of the project. | |

| R-56 | High Priority, Short-Term Project Award
To provide limited interim research support based on the merit of a pending R01 application while applicant gathers additional data to revise a new or competing renewal application. Applicants do not submit requests for a High Priority Award (R56). Instead, NCI program staff nominate previously reviewed R01 applications that are beyond the current NCI payline but, because of their merit, are eligible for funding. |
