For Visitors

The estimated 12 million analog and half-million born-digital photographs and graphic images in the Still Picture holdings at the National Archives at College Park, attract a wide variety of researchers: documentary filmmakers, print and electronic publishers, media representatives, military veterans, museum curators, social and cultural historians, and the general public.

On-site researchers may examine the images and related finding aids in the Still Picture Research Room at College Park, Maryland. Consult the Still Picture staff in advance about the availability of records, and about restrictions involving the use of NARA-provided copying equipment -- copy stands, and black-and-white and color electrostatic copiers -- and the use of researchers' own equipment.

Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Information about the Holdings

Some of the specific subjects found in our holdings include:

Still Picture unit holdings parallel the ever-evolving history of photography. Found among the records are examples of virtually every photographic and photomechanical process and format, from glass to digital, from black-and-white to color, from hand-tinted slides to posters. Collodion wet plate glass negatives, acetate and polyester film negatives, chromogenic negatives and transparencies, salt prints, albumen prints, gelatin developing-out prints, cyanotypes, letterpress halftones, and photolithographs are just a few of the processes represented. Among the diverse formats are cartes de visite, lantern slides, 2" X 2" slides, 8" X 10" prints, panoramic prints, and 35 mm. and 2 1/4" X 2 1/4" negatives with corresponding contact sheet images.

Search the Archival Research Catalog (ARC)

The Archival Research Catalog (ARC) database can be used to search by media type and by subject, date, caption, etc.

  • Among the accessible resources are the majority of series descriptions covering the holdings of the Still Picture unit and digitized versions of several thousand selected photographs and posters from these holdings.

Search Hint :

  • From the ARC main page, hit the yellow "Search" button
  • Go to the ARC basic search screen.
  • Select Photographs and other graphic material from the Type filter box, and "Still Picture Records LICON from the NARA Location filter box.
  • Press the Go button to retrieve descriptions of photographs within the holdings of the Still Picture unit.
  • (You may limit your search further by entering keywords in the Keywords boxes.)
  • For personal names in the Search box type in the personal name, word or subjects of interest to you. For example, Mathew Brady, Abraham Lincoln, Civil War, World War II, or navy ships. Then for location choose Still Pictures Records LICON, Special Media Archives Services Division.

    Then Press the "Go" button to retrieve descriptions of photographs within the holdings of the Still Picture unit.

  • If you have the photographic identification number and want to see if the image is on line. In the Search box type in the number (preceded by the letters (NWDNS) between the following types of brackets { } - EXAMPLE - {NWDNS-19-N-28-29-4}.

    Then Press the "Go" button to retrieve a digital copy of the image, if a digital copy is on line.
