Converting data to decisions

Many of the apps, mashups, and visualizations that are created using government data have a geospatial component to them. Some integrate data for predictive modeling, others layer data on maps to show correlations amongst activities. For Data.gov, the vast majority of datasets are geospatial data. What are the issues related to geospatial data and the apps developed from such data?

Accessing the Data.gov Catalog Through an Open Interface and KMS

I agree that one should be able to access the Data.gov (and all data catalogs) through an open interface and that is why I have used Spotfire to accomplish that at http://semanticommunity.net/ where you can click on the down arrow on the right hand side of any Data Table banner and get 'Export Table' to download the data table in CSV. I have also worked to organize EPA's information in a knowledge management system at http://semanticommunity.info/EPA.

Accessing the Data.gov catalog using an open interface

A couple months ago I wrote a blog post about accessing the Data.gov catalog through an open interface. With the International Open Government Data Conference taking place, I thought people might find this interesting:

Need knowledge management systems

EPA: Data is complex and need analysts and scientists to translate data. Get data to policy and decision makers Need knowledge management systems – maintained and updated through various virtual organizations.

Many decision support tools need more focus in order to better estimate the implications of climate changes. Also need virtual organizations for sharing in data sources, SMEs, etc.

GEOSS

EPA's Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) program: Looks at satellite images, aircraft, radars, and try to bring all global conversations for the globe’s benefit.
Also, using linked-data, the EPA can determine authoritative registries for key "concepts".For instance; chemical substances, bio organisms:  How do we use linked-open data to link substance data- facilities to corporate ownership in an agile manner
