Guidelines Evidence Report

In 1998, the NHLBI, in cooperation with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, released the Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults: The Evidence Report, the first Federal guidelines on this subject. Review and revision of the guidelines is currently underway.

Along with the evidence report, a variety of other resources exist for professionals to assist them in assessing and treating overweight and obese patients.

Healthy Weight Tip

The initial goal of weight-loss therapy should be to reduce body weight by about 10 percent from baseline. With success, and if warranted, further weight loss can be attempted.
