The Real Tour of the United States Mint

You can tour both the Philadelphia and the Denver facilities for free.  These tours cover the present state of coin manufacturing and the history of the United States Mint.  Learn about the craftsmanship required at all stages of the minting process, from designing to striking.  For visitors with special needs, visit the Exhibits and Public Services Office.

If you're near Denver or Philadelphia, here's how you can arrange to see the United States Mint facility in that city.

Philadelphia, PA 19106-1886

Planning Your Tour

As of April 6, 2005, the United States Mint has resumed self-guided tours at its Philadelphia facility.  People no longer have to schedule tours through the office of a United States Senator or Representative.  (Congressional tours scheduled before April 6 will have priority.)

For a same-day tour, you may line up at the visitor entrance of the building, located on 5th Street between Arch and Race streets.  Tours are offered on a "first come, first served" basis.  Adults will be asked for government-issued photo identification for security purposes.

Tour hours are 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.

Mint Gift Shop

Located in the main lobby of the building, the gift shop has United States Mint coin sets, commemorative coins, numismatic collectibles, books, games, and United States Mint souvenirs.

Special Needs

The United States Mint provides access for people with disabilities.  Please let us know your needs when you arrive or in advance by calling (215) 408-0112.

Safety and Security

Please bear with us, as all tour policies are subject to change without notice.  If the Department of Homeland Security level is elevated to CODE ORANGE, the United States Mint at Philadelphia will be CLOSED to the public unless otherwise noted.  The United States Mint reserves the right to deny access to anyone at any time and to have the United States Mint Police search anyone about to tour the building.

For everyone's protection, the United States Mint must keep a variety of items from being brought into the building.  Any foods or beverages, tobacco products, personal grooming items (such as make up, hair brush or comb, lip or hand lotions), umbrellas, strollers, any pointed objects (such as pens and knitting needles), aerosol containers, cameras, recording devices, guns, ammunition, fireworks, electric stun guns, mace, martial arts devices, and knives of any size are not allowed into the building.  Activities like taking pictures, smoking, eating, and drinking are also prohibited inside.

No packages of any type will be allowed in, including shopping bags or recent purchases.  Necessary medicines will be identified and will be held by an adult chaperone for the entire tour.  All visitors are required to enter through a metal detector.

Parking and Restaurants

The United States Mint does not provide parking.  There are no restaurants on the grounds.
