New for 2012 - America the Beautiful Quarters® Program “S” mint mark circulating quality quarters! These “S” mint mark quarters will not be released into circulation and will only be available from the United States Mint.
The Denali National Park and Preserve quarter is the fifth to be released in 2012, the fifth bearing the “S” mint mark and the 15th overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. This bag is filled with 100 Denali National Park and Preserve quarters minted on the main production floor of the United States Mint at San Francisco.
The reverse (tails side) design features a Dall sheep with Mount McKinley rising in the background. Inscriptions are DENALI, ALASKA, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Design candidates were developed in consultation with representatives of Denali National Park and Preserve. Each coin in the series features a common obverse (heads) with the 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original model. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.

In 2010, the United States Mint launched the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, a 12-year initiative with 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring reverse designs depicting some of our most cherished national parks and other national sites. Under this program, the United States Mint will issue five new quarter designs per year, with one final design in 2021.
In 1980, the park was expanded from 2 to 6 million acres, including preserve lands, and the name changed from Mount McKinley National Park to Denali National Park and Preserve. Today's boundaries include the awe-inspiring 20,320-foot Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. The park’s dynamic glaciated landscape supports a diversity of wildlife, including grizzly bears, caribou, wolves, Dall sheep and moose. Archeological evidence that dates back more than 12,000 years ago indicates Alaska's native people moved through this landscape seasonally, likely hunting large mammals, fishing and gathering plants. It was first established as a national site to protect wildlife populations on February 26, 1917 (39 Stat. 938).
