The unprecedented attacks on September 11, 2001, created hazardous environments and situations for first responders, community residents, and those who helped in cleanup. Hazards that firefighters, police officers, cleanup workers and others were exposed to include airborne toxins and other physical and mental hazards. NIOSH leads the federal government’s efforts to track health effects information, conduct supporting research, and manage the health program created to provide care to first responders and others who helped after the disasters. This page provides links to all the major 9/11-related health and safety research initiatives in which NIOSH is involved, including:

  • The federal World Trade Center Health Program for 9/11 responders and survivors in New York City, and responders at the Pentagon in Arlington, VA, and the Flight 93 crash site in Shanksville, PA
