Energy and Environment

BTS performs economic, statistical, and data analysis on the linked issues of energy consumption, energy intensity of transportation and the economy, greenhouse gases, and issues related to the impact of transportation on the environment. BTS uses its own data and other data sources to analyze these issues from a multimodal perspective and identify data needs. BTS also provides data on energy and the environment in response to queries from other government agencies and offices. Recent examples are the White House Council of Economic Advisors, the Department of Transportation Chief of Staff, and the DOT Office of Policy. Current research topics underway include:

  • The impact of oil price changes on highway construction costs, transportation carriers, transportation energy use and prices charged for transportation
  • Identifying the key drivers of transportation energy usage
  • Determining data needs to support policy development on transportation and climate change.
