Yasmeen Khan trabaja en la conservación de libros antiguos de la Biblioteca del Congreso. Su trabajo consiste en preservar las colecciones de libros únicos.

"No podemos cambiar el aspecto del libro, hacer el libro antiguo un libro nuevo," dice Khan. "Para mí cada proyecto es muy interesante en el momento en que estoy haciendo el proyecto. Ahora estoy trabajando en un proyecto que es muy especial: la restauración de un manuscrito antiguo hecho en pergamino".

Yasmeen se refiere a este libro de oración judío de 1478. El autor es Joel ben Simeón y en todo el planeta solo existen 12 manuscritos hechos por él.

Inside you find a treasure trove of information: 144 million pieces, including no less than 33 million books in 460 languages.

This library contains unique collections and documents, such as Thomas Jefferson's personal library donated to Congress and the draft of the Declaration of Independence.

Yasmeen Khan works on the conservation of ancient books from the Library of Congress. Her job is to preserve rare book collections.

"We cannot change the appearance of the book, make the ancient book a new book," says Khan. "To me every project is very interesting at the moment I'm doing the project. I'm working on a project that is very special: the restoration of an ancient manuscript made on parchment."

Yasmeen is referring to this Jewish prayer book of 1478. The author is Joel ben Simeon and there are only 12 manuscripts by him in the world.

Using modern science and technology, Yasmeen works to preserve books like this that are unique for their historical and artistic importance as well as their religious significance.

Yasmeen said that to pursue this career one should study some chemistry and fine arts, as well as history and art history.

"The advice I give is to ask what it is, not just what is the text, but what paint was used, how was it done by the people who did it, what was the ink used, what was the paper they used and where was it made back then," says Khan.
