My name is Juan Rodriguez and I work here at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. My title is zookeeper.

My passion for working with animals started when I was about five or seven years old and my brother used to bring to our house different kinds of animals he found outdoors. I learned to take care of the birds, several cats and eventually learned how to work with animals.

I work with a variety of animals but my specialty is the cheetah, which are the fastest felines... I also work with other animals like the sloth bear, the clouded leopard, and different varieties of animals from different continents.

My daily routine with the sloths ... Although people think they are lazy, they are not. In fact they are very active during the day and at night. We need to give them enough enrichment (toys and food treats, are used to help re-create an animal's natural habitat. The enrichment items encourage animals to exercise their natural instincts to play, learn and grow.) during the day and at night. During the day we provide them with food, clean their cages, and also if they need any medication we administer it in in the morning and in the afternoon. And then before we leave for the night we give them more enrichment.

Sloths are originally from India but can also be found in surrounding areas like Sri Lanka and southern Nepal.

All animals have different temperaments and different personalities and some of them can tell the difference between their keepers.

When we talk to the public we get an opportunity to help people learn more about animals and how to help animals in captivity and in the jungle.

As part of the Smithsonian, our mission is basically to inform the public. It is very important for us to educate the public so that they can learn more about animals and, more importantly, learn what they can do to help animals in captivity and in the jungle.
