Protecting Society & Reducing Crime

The Federal Bureau of Prisons protects society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prisons and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and that provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens.

Shortly after his appointment in late December 2011 to the position of Director, Charles E. Samuels, Jr., communicated directly with the inmate population regarding his expectations of them during their incarceration. His message addressed both conduct and the use of opportunities for self-improvement and reentry preparation. English and Spanish versions of that message are available for viewing.
