Year of Elder Abuse Prevention
On June 14, 2012, the Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the Department of Justice and the Consumer
Financial Protection Bureau, hosted the first-ever event at the White House to commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The day-long symposium brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including administration officials, representatives
from the financial community, national advocacy groups, and individuals and organizations committed to
addressing elder abuse and financial exploitation in their communities.
Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, announced a new funding opportunity to test innovative approaches to preventing elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation and the establishment of the Elder Justice Coordinating Council as enacted in the Elder Justice Act. A number of other promising new public and private initiatives and collaborations were forged. More details about World Day at the White House can be found Below.
In an effort to continue raising public awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and to recognize the importance of preventing, identifying, and responding to this devastating problem, the U.S. Administration on Community Living’s Administration on Aging is excited to announce a new initiative: the Year of Elder Abuse Prevention. Beginning on September 4, 2012 and culminating on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2013, the Year of Elder Abuse Prevention Initiative encourages national, state, and local partners to “Take a Stand” against elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. As part of the Year of Elder Abuse Prevention, AoA will provide information, tools, and resources to support all our efforts to Take a Stand against elder abuse and bring new and increased attention to this issue. Throughout the year, look for:
- Monthly Guest Articles from experts in the field of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation
