AACT Database

CTTI completed the first phase of a multi-phase project to make the acquisition and analysis of the aggregate data from ClinicalTrials.gov more user-friendly. Using publicly available and downloadable data from ClinicalTrials.gov, a restructured and reformatted relational database was developed. This is referred to as the database for Aggregate Analysis of ClincalTrials.gov (AACT).

AACT database extracts with supporting documents

The Oracle extracts from the AACT database are available in two formats: dmp file and pipe-delimited text format.

Dataset reflects data downloaded from ClinicalTrials.gov September 27, 2011.

To assist users with interpretation of the data, additional documents are included as part of the zip files:

  1. Readme file provides critical considerations for database administrators and statistical programmers regarding the file imports.
  2. Comprehensive data dictionary contains seven sections: current variables, enumerations, constraints, record counts, database schema, comprehensive change history, and variable history dates. This document provides clarity of definitions, derivation of terms, data model structure, and historical information for each data element in ClinicalTrials.gov to facilitate understanding of when fields were added or modified.
  3. Points to Consider documents provide guidelines for using the data. View Points to Consider When Using AACT 2011.  View Points to Consider When Using AACT 2010.
  4. High Level Data Dictionary delivers a summary view of the variables contained in the AACT database and is designed for investigators and researchers. Users may also wish to access the data element definitions as posted on the ClinicalTrials.gov Protocol Registration System site; this document provides some information related to the branching nature of the registration questions. View High Level Data Dictionary 2011. View High Level Data Dictionary 2010.
  5. Snapshot Slides provide background on ClinicalTrials.gov and the AACT database as well as an overview of the clinical trials enterprise as revealed by ClinicalTrials.gov.
